With the church picnic being on Sunday, and my last name starting with the letter F, I was to bring a large dessert. And what's easier than a chocolate cake?
So I preheat my oven. As I'm mixing the batter, something smells like it's burning. I figure it's just a little bit of food burnt onto the bottom of the oven from last weeks lasagna, so I don't worry about it and continue mixing.
As I open the oven to put the cake in, black smoke comes billowing out. This can't be good. When the smoke clears, I see that there is a yellow goopy melted mess at the bottom, some of which is still drooping off of the oven racks. I just couldn't figure it out - but it smelled BAD.
All of a sudden I figured it out. A yellow plastic bowl, courtesy of my son, was put in the oven in an attempt to help mommy put dishes away. AAH!!
Oh well. I have a self-clean oven. I just took the racks out and turned on the self-clean. BAD IDEA. Oven fire!! Rob was outside and I called him in, in a complete panic. Rob, being the most calm person in the world, just didn't seem a bit surprised. He opened the oven door (bad idea) and sprayed it with water (BAD IDEA!) and the fire grew a little larger. Good grief!! In the mean time, Isaiah was freaking out because all of the smoke detectors were blaring (at least they work, right?), and it was super super smokey in the house.
I took Isaiah outside, and Rob scraped the goo out of the oven, and then we turned the self-clean back on so that we could get the rest of it out. My house had never ever smelled so awful.
This morning (Monday), everything is back to normal. No stench. And my oven in clean.
Needless to say, I did NOT contribute to Sunday's Church picnic. I think after reading this, they'll understand. :)

Oh how something so simple can go so wrong.
I set popcorn on fire in my microwave once.
At least you have 1 less dish to wash now :P
